Learn how to assess band, cups and straps when choosing a jelly bra size, plus common signs that a bra does not fit.

Start with measurements
Use a soft measuring tape to measure around the ribcage directly under the bust and around the fullest part of the bust. Keep the tape level and comfortably snug, without compressing the tissue. These numbers are a starting point, not a guarantee: each brand and bra construction can fit differently. Use Swanz’s bra size calculator as a guide and compare against the available size options.
Check the band first
The band supplies much of the stability of a bra. Fasten the bra on a comfortable set of hooks; it should run horizontally across the back and should not climb when you raise your arms. If it rides up, the band may be too loose. If it feels sharply restrictive, review the band size and the way the cups fit.
Then check the cups
Look for a smooth cup edge without obvious overflow, empty space or wrinkling. Light padding should not create a gap at the top or push against breast tissue. Bend slightly forward when putting the bra on so the tissue sits naturally inside each cup, then check the outline while standing upright.
Adjust straps last
Shorten or lengthen the straps until they remain on the shoulders without digging. Straps should help position the cups, not compensate for a loose band. Move your arms, sit and bend to check whether the bra stays in place.
What do common fit issues mean?
- Back band rises: review band fit.
- Cup overflow: review cup size or style.
- Gaping: review cup shape, adjustment or size.
- Straps dig: examine band stability before tightening further.
- Centre or lower edge shifts: try a different size or fit.
Check size by colour

Quick FAQ
Should I size up for comfort?
Not automatically. A larger band can reduce support; evaluate band and cup fit together.
Can a size calculator guarantee fit?
No. It gives a useful estimate, but trying the style and checking its construction remain important.
